Thurrock Gazette Wraparound - 26 September 2008
Partners decided it was time to produce another of its Wraparounds for the Thurrock Gazette to highlight some of the exciting developments in Thurrock and celebrate success in Thurrock. We hope you enjoy reading it.
Mapping of Links between the Business and Learning and Skills Sectors
Business links with schools by company
Business links with schools by school
Business links Chafford Hundred
The Partnership recognised the need to map the links between employers, schools and colleges and undertook its first mapping exercise in 2004.
The aim of this exercise is that we should refrain from approaching employers, particularly SMEs, if we can see they are already working with another school.
Recognition of the contribution already being made by an employer avoids the same employers being continually approached and helps maintain goodwill between all parties.
Trident, Education Business Partnership and all organisations under the Link-Ed umbrella also take this information into account.
It is recognised the list is not comprehensive and never can be even with regular updating but it has proved valuable in our relationship with business.

It is still true that, in most cases, the academic achievement of the child is directly related to the academic achievement of the mother, which is why it is so important that all parents have the opportunity to achieve their potential.
Parents and staff at Woodlands Pre School, together with the surrounding community, are acting as good role models for Purfleet children with their enthusiasm to return to learning.

Follow Up Consultation with Adults Not Currently in Learning
Fulfilling its role as the Voice of the Learner and Potential Learner, the Partnership carried out a further consultation in 2002 to enable it to meet those needs of those not in learning. The findings from the consultation have been shared with the Learning and Skills Council and are being acted upon by the Partnership.
Top Marks For Adult Education
ADULT students in Thurrock have given top marks to education, as part of a borough-wide survey.
More than 1,000 (19+ age group) people studying on more than 400 courses in Thurrock were questioned as part of the study by the Thurrock Learning Partnership.
Consultation on Learning with Adults in Thurrock
To enable it to meet the needs of the local community as fully as possible, the Partnership undertook extensive consultation on learning with nearly 2,000 adults; approximately half of that number were not in learning. There were some very interesting responses. The Partnership was particularly encouraged by the very high regard for the quality of provision available locally.
Consultation with Young People (16 - 19) NOT in Full-Time Education or Employment
The Partnership wants to ensure that all young people have as many opportunities as possible for a fulfilling career. A variety of approaches were adopted to endeavour to consult with as many young people as possible. Full responses were received from 35% of the target group. For the overwhelming majority the biggest single barrier to continuing in learning or undertaking training was financial.
The Partnership has presented its evidence to the local Learning and Skills Council and to the DfES via the regional Government Office. The Partnership was delighted to hear the announcement from Government on 2 July 2002 that there is now a very real prospect of payment being available to support young people in continuing with their learning.
